PROJECT ROLE

Subconsultant

Located across the street from Grand Central Station—an extremely busy section of midtown Manhattan—this project involved the replacement and relocation of underground utilities including major steel trunk water mains (1420 LF 36” diameter) along with 1880 LF of distribution water mains and 400 LF of 12/16” DIP Storm Sewers beside and underneath the Park Avenue Viaduct. The major section of Park Ave was transformed into a pedestrian plaza for streetscape safety improvements under NYCDOT’s Vision 0 initiative due to high vehicle and pedestrian traffic with the nearby Grand Central Station, with complete street features, green infrastructure such as rain gardens, and electrical fixtures to promote the public space. The viaduct, underground subway structures, and other interferences were accounted for when developing the trunk main and resulted in various horizontal/vertical offsets while minimizing the head loss By doing so, it was determined that the originally designed 48” trunk main had to be revised to accommodate low clearances crossing the existing subway structures.
